CONSERVING WATER

Inside Conservation

  • Run only a fully loaded dishwasher or washing machine.
  • When hand washing dishes, use one sink basin for washing and one for rinsing.
  • Keep drinking water cold by storing a pitcher of water in the refrigerator.
  • Repair leaky faucets. Replace worn washers, the common source of leaks.
  • On older toilets, fill a plastic bottle with water, seal the lid and drop it in your toilet tank to save approximately two gallons per flush.
  • Turn off the water while you brush your teeth with toothpaste; then turn it on again to rinse.
  • Don't stay in the shower longer than you need to. Turn off the water while you soap up.

 Outside Conservation

  • Water the lawn in the early morning or later in the evening, but not between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Make sure you aren't watering the street or sidewalk.
  • Maintain a lawn height of two and one-half to three inches. This helps protect the roots from loss of moisture through evaporation.
  • Aerate clay soils at least once a year to help the soil retain moisture.
  • Mulch around plants, bushes and trees. This encourages healthy roots, while maintaining root moisture.
  • Collect rainwater to be used for garden and houseplant watering.

  Sprinkler Systems

  • For those who have in-ground irrigation systems, utilize a rain sensor shutoff device to prevent water waste. The “sensor technology will inhibit or interrupt the operation of the landscape irrigation system during periods of sufficient moisture.
  • Also, if you have a timer on your irrigation system, make sure that you are not watering during the heat of the day (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.) as most of the water from your system will evaporate prior to soaking into the soil. This fall or early next spring may be a great time to have a sensor installed on your irrigation system.

  Family Water Audit

  • Here’s a fun and easy way to see how water-wise you are around your home.  To take the quiz, visit www.wateruseitwisely.com/familywater/index.shtml , click on the button that describes your water use habits, and then click Calculate Score to see how you're doing. It might surprise you just how easy it is to save water – and money – around your home.

A LITTLE INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Pet Licenses are due on an annual basis.  At time of purchase, you must provide us with a copy of your pets vaccination records.

  • Business Licenses, Contractors Licenses and Merchants Licenses are due on an annual basis.  At time of renewal or purchase, you must provide us with a copy of your insurance records.

  • Peddlers Licenses are due on a day by day basis.

  • Please call City Hall to purchase a cemetery lot.  Lots are usually sold in groups of two.  We do sell individual lots if available to those who do not have relatives that are buried in the cemetery.

  • We have a contract with  Whalen Services.  Whalen Services takes care of maintaining the cemetery and openings for graves.

  • Sewer is based on the amount of water that is used in your household.  Depending on how many gallons of water you use, will depend on how much your sewer bill will be.

  • Always make sure that you do not have any leaks.  A slow dripping faucet or a running toilet can cause your water bill to be a large amount in no time at all.  If you suspect that you have a leak, please call City Hall and we will put in a work order for Maintenance to do a check.  In order for them to check, all faucets need to be turned off and you cannot have any laundry going, etc.  You must be at your home during the time that they check your meter for a leak.

  • In order to sign up for water, sewer, and trash services, you will need to come to City Hall to fill out the paper work.  You must sign the service agreement and pay a $150.00 deposit and a $5.00 turn on fee BEFORE you are eligible fore services. Bills are due by no later than the 15th of each month.  Failing to pay your bill by the 15th will lead to a $25.00 late fee and possible disconnection of usage which will then lead to a $35.00 reconnect fee.

  • The City of Auxvasse has a contract with United Security Bank which involves the collection of your utility (water, sewer and trash) bill.  You must have your bill with you at time of payment.  Failing to do so will consist of you coming to City Hall for a copy of your bill which consists of a $0.10 charge per copy.
